What is your ideal healthy life? – Here are the 5 essential components to figuring that out

If you are reading this at the time of posting then today is July 13th…That means we are almost exactly half way through the year!
Where did it go?
Just like you I am not exactly sure but what I do know is that we can make one of two choices about this dilemma…We can chose to just let go of our New Year’s resolutions, hopes, dreams and goals and figure it’s too late or …We can rally and figure out how to get back on the wagon… Everything is figureoutable!  In fact, I have a plan to help you figure it out.

Essential #1 – Get very clear

Don’t simply make a statement like “I want to get healthy”.
When designing your ideal healthy life plan speak in specific terms.  What does “getting healthy” look like to you? What does it feel like? What will you be able to do when you “get healthy”?  You might even have a person in mind that you would like to model.  This is excellent because this may be a person that is relatable to you.  You can watch what it is they do in daily life.  You can ask them questions about their routines and mindsets that have helped them to become the heatlhy, fit person that they are today.  A statement of clarity might look something like this:  “I want to improve my health, stamina and strength so that I can climb ______ mountain with my grandkids on a beautifully sunny day and wait for them at the top.”  Make your own clarity statement before we move on with this article because I am going to ask you some important questions to make that statement a possibility
Go ahead…I’ll wait.
No, really, I have time…
Clarity statement goes here:____________________________________________
Now, ask yourself…. What is my mission? What do I want to do in life?  Sometimes there are sacrifices to be made to attain the ideal fitness life. We typically think of sacrifices as a negative thing but are they really that big when you consider the clarity statement above?  Achieving quality of life, being healthy enough to do things that will enhance relationships and spending time with loved ones for a long time to come is so incredibly valuable.  Is it more valuable than spending evenings on the couch rather than going to the gym or preparing healthy foods?
Ask yourself…”Are the sacrifices I might need to make really that big compared to what I will get when I am living my ideal healthy life?”
Will it be beer? Late nights? Ice cream?  Your favorite TV shows
Ask yourself…Why is this so important to me?
What will keep you going on this mission when things get tough?  Or people doubt you?
Take each part of this mission and break it down into it’s important components:  Fitness – Nutrition – Mindset – Lifestyle…What should you be doing in each area to help you stay the course?  What will your plan be in tough times?  What actions steps should you be taking each day in each category to keep propelling you forward?
Now, to really make this work you need to jot these down.  As I said before, everything is figureoutable but often our problem is that we don’t take the time to figure it out.  We let these thoughts flit thorough our brain without giving them the time to really figure out a solution to some of the obstacles that present themselves along our journey to health.  It is very important to give this ideal life a little brain time.

Essential #2 – Keep it simple

simple ideal healthy life

When we start jotting stuff down and making space for it in our calendar we can easily become overwhelmed with the “how”.  We can spend hours scouring Pinterest for recipes, watching You Tube for videos, wondering which is the right program for our goals.  If you make the process too complicated you will find that you wont’ execute.  All of a sudden this beautiful plan you have becomes it’s own barrier.  Keep it simple.

Take a small step each day.  When your head gets cluttered with all of the info, take a step back, declutter, simplify, take a small step .  DO a few things and be extraordinary
Focus on execution rather than gathering more info:
Think of it like this:  Simplicity >>>  Clarity >>> Action

Essential #3 – It’s all about choices and decisions

Taking action is about choices and decisions.  A decision is something that is calculated on a choice that has beendecisions for ideal healthy life researched.  In other words, when shopping for a super cute pair of shoes for example, you scroll through pages and pages of choices (or walk the aisles in the olden days 😉  If you are shopping in a store, you touch them, get a feel for their sturdiness, shape and color.  If you’re shopping online you take a look at what other people bought, your read reviews and then put them in your shopping cart to compare with your other choices.  When you have researched all of your choices, you compare them, select the perfect shoe and make the final decision to purchase.
The same process is true with your ideal health.  It starts with researching the potential choices and making a final decision that will hopefully get you closer to your goal.  We are a product of our choices.  Where you are today is a reflection of choices you have made in the past…no guilt, no shame, just recognize it.  The person you will become is a reflection of the choices you will make from here on out.  Who is that person?
Every day we have the option to chose how the next day will go.  Will we choose the foods that will make us feel great so we can believe in ourselves to take more action.  Will we make time for that workout that will create more energy in us to keep the momentum going. (Remember the physics lesson: an object in motion stays in motion, an object at rest stays at rest)
We make the decisions of whether or not to execute those choices
To simplify:
1) Plan>>>  2) Commit>>> 3) Execute

Essential #4 – Do the work

Now, we can jot down notes about how great this ideal wellness will be when we get there but ACTION is the key.
Anything worth having requires work.
Action for Ideal healthy Life
I always say” “Action begets action”  How many times do you workout in the morning, feel revved and get things
done that day versus the day when you wake up late, stay in bed, skip the workout, stay in your jammies and sloth around for the day getting very little done.  Now, don’t get me wrong.  Those kinds of days are really nice to pepper in once in a while but the less ambitious mindset of a day like this will bring less action.  Think for a moment about how great you feel when you get things done versus those times when you think (after a big stretch and a yawn from lack of activity)…”MAN! I got NOTHING done today” It’s like a completely blank day.  Your inactivity led to more inactivity which led to a big stretch and a yawn and a somewhat depressing recap of the lost day.  Get up and move, drive the energy, get it done, think of yourself as a doer, get a surge of  energy from that thought alone, get more done, feel unstoppable… You have so much potential, we just need to get the ball rolling and gather momentum.
Think of it like this…
Potential>>>Action>>>Beliefs>>> More potential>>>More action>>>More beliefs
Here’s how to do the work:
List out what you need to do to achieve improvement in each category (Fitness, nutrition and mindset).  List our each step that it will take to get these things accomplished.  Do you need to join a gym? Do you need a workout plan? Do you need a meal plan?  Do you need to collect recipes?  What resources or people do you need to surround yourself with to make this happen? What obstacles may come your way?  What will you do about them.  Your dream is important enough have it’s own time slot in your calendar!
Do it daily.
Measure it.
When you do this, your identity or belief of yourself becomes someone who “does”!

Essential #5 – Be bold

Make a few choices that scare you a little.  Now, don’t get too excited here and change everything all at once.  Unless you are an all or nothing person.  Some people are and can function very well this way, you want to get a little scary but not so much that you won’t jump!
Here are some ideas on how to be bold and step our of your comfort zone (because this truly is where change begins)
  • Join a fitness class
  • Hire a trainer that won’t let you fudge
  • Go sugar or gluten free
  • Begin Journaling
Just remember that imperfection is going to happen but it should not be seen as failure.  There is ALWAYS something to be learned and truth is that slipping up and continuing the course is what weeds out the uncommited…Are you commited?
